How it works
The JPEG is decoded and saved as PNG, which uses lossless compression: from now on, saving and editing won't degrade it further. Converting cannot restore detail already lost to JPEG compression, and the PNG will usually be larger (often 2–5×) because it stores every pixel exactly.
Converting to PNG does not make the background transparent by itself — the image keeps its original background.
