How it works
Each symbology has its own rules. EAN-13 and UPC-A encode 12 and 11 digits plus a check digit computed with the modulo-10 algorithm; Code 128 encodes any ASCII text compactly; Code 39 supports uppercase letters and digits; ITF-14 is used on shipping cartons.
Invalid values (wrong length or characters) are rejected rather than producing an unreadable code. Note that retail EAN/UPC numbers must be obtained from GS1 to be used on products sold in shops.

Can I invent my own EAN-13 for retail?
No. Retail barcodes must use numbers licensed by GS1 to avoid clashes with other products.
