Runs in your browser
How to use
- Choose Add VAT or Remove VAT.
- Enter the amount.
- Enter the VAT rate.
- Read net, VAT and gross amounts.
How it works
Adding VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). Removing VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). Removing 20% VAT is not the same as subtracting 20%: 120 incl. VAT is 100 net, while 120 − 20% would wrongly give 96.
Examples
- Invoice
- 100 net + 20% VAT = 120 gross (VAT 20).
- Receipt
- 59.99 gross at 21% = 49.58 net (VAT 10.41).
Common uses
- Preparing invoices and quotes
- Claiming VAT on expenses
- Comparing B2B and consumer prices

Frequently asked questions
Why can't I just subtract the VAT percentage?
Because VAT is calculated on the net price, not on the gross price. Divide by (1 + rate) instead.
Does this work for GST or sales tax?
Yes. The maths is identical for any percentage-based tax.
