How to use
- Choose the calculation.
- Enter the original value and the new value (or percentage).
- Read the percentage decrease.
How it works
Percentage decrease = (original − new) ÷ original × 100. To reduce a value by p%, multiply it by (1 − p ÷ 100).
A decrease can never exceed 100% for positive values, because a value can't fall below zero. If the new value is higher, the tool tells you it's actually an increase.
Examples
- Energy bill
- 180 → 153 = −15%.
- Reduce a budget by 12%
- 5,000 × 0.88 = 4,400.
Common uses
- Price reductions
- Cost savings
- Weight or time reduction

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a discount calculator?
It's the same maths; the discount calculator adds stacked discounts and savings for shopping.
Why doesn't a 20% decrease undo a 20% increase?
100 + 20% = 120, and 120 − 20% = 96: the second percentage applies to a bigger base.
