Online Notepad

Somewhere to put text right now: a paste buffer, a phone number read out to you, a draft you will tidy later. It keeps what you type in this browser, counts the words as you go, and downloads as a .txt file. No account and no upload.

How to use

  1. Start typing or paste your text.
  2. Leave the page whenever you like — the note is kept in this browser.
  3. Copy it or download it as .txt when you need it elsewhere.
  4. Press Clear to wipe it.

How it works

The note is written to your browser's local storage shortly after you stop typing, so a long note is not saved on every keystroke. Local storage belongs to this browser on this device: the note is still there after you close the tab or restart the computer, and it is not on any server, not on your phone, and not visible to us.

That is also its limit. A private or incognito window forgets everything when it closes. Clearing your browsing data clears the note with it. Another browser, another device or another profile shows an empty pad. If the note matters, download the .txt — and the pad tells you when storage is blocked rather than pretending to have saved.

The counts come from the same code as our word counter: words are runs of letters and digits, Chinese and Japanese characters are counted one by one, and characters are counted the way a person perceives them, so an emoji with a skin tone counts as one.

Examples

A scratch pad between two apps
Paste something formatted here to strip the formatting before pasting it on.
A note taken on a call
Type while you listen; the note is still here afterwards without having saved anything.
Writing to a length
Keep an eye on the word count while drafting a post or an answer with a limit.

Common uses

  • Keeping a quick note without opening an app
  • Stripping formatting out of copied text
  • Drafting something to a word limit
  • Jotting down a number or an address during a call

Frequently asked questions

Is my note private?

It never leaves your browser. The text is stored by the browser on your own device and is not sent anywhere, so nobody else — including us — can read it. Anyone who can use your device and browser profile can, so do not keep passwords here.

Will the note still be there tomorrow?

In the same browser on the same device, yes. It survives closing the tab and restarting the computer. It does not survive a private window closing, clearing your browsing data, or switching to another browser or device.

Does it need an account or an internet connection?

No account. The page needs a connection to load, after which the typing and saving are local. A reload while offline may fail, so download anything you cannot afford to lose.

How much text can it hold?

Up to two million characters, roughly a 400,000-word book. Browsers cap local storage at a few megabytes in total, and if that cap is reached the pad says it could not save instead of losing the text quietly.

Can I keep several notes?

This pad holds one note. For a second one, download the first as .txt and clear the pad.

Why is there no bold or italic?

It is deliberately plain text, which is what makes it safe to paste anywhere without carrying hidden formatting. For styled characters that survive a copy, use the fancy text generator.
