How to reorder the pages of a PDF

Move, duplicate and remove PDF pages on thumbnails, fix a double-sided scan where every other page is upside down or out of order, and keep page numbers right.

· 5 min read

Reordering a PDF means deciding the sequence the pages should appear in and writing a new document in that order. The pages themselves are copied unchanged — same text, same image resolution — so nothing is re-rendered and nothing loses quality. What changes is only which page comes after which.

The quickest route here: open Organize PDF (Reorder Pages), drop the file, and use the arrows under each thumbnail to move a page earlier or later. The same row of buttons duplicates a page or takes it out, and Reverse order flips the whole document in one click — which is the fix for a stack scanned back to front. Click Save new PDF and download. Nothing is uploaded; your original file stays as it was.

What you can do on the thumbnails

Action What it is for
Move a page earlier or later An appendix that landed in the middle, a signature page at the front
Duplicate a page A form page you need twice, a separator sheet
Remove a page A blank sheet from the scanner, a page that should not be in this copy
Reverse the whole order A document fed into the scanner upside down, or a reversed stack
Original order Undo everything and start again

Nothing is written until you press Save new PDF, so you can rearrange as much as you like and compare against the thumbnails before committing.

The three jobs people mean by "reorder"

A scan that came out in the wrong order. Most sheet-fed scanners put the last page first when the stack is fed face-up. Reverse order fixes the whole document in one click, which is far quicker than moving twenty pages by hand.

A double-sided scan where every other page is upside down. This is a rotation problem, not an order problem: the back of each sheet goes through the feeder the other way up. The order is right, the pages are not. Fix that with Rotate PDF, which can turn selected pages rather than all of them, and only then reorder if you still need to.

Pages from two different documents interleaved. When a double-sided document is scanned as two separate single-sided passes, you end up with all the fronts and then all the backs. There is no automatic interleave here: use the arrows to bring each back page under its front, working from the top down so the pages you have already placed do not shift.

Reorder first, number last

Page numbers added by Add page numbers to a PDF are drawn onto the pages, so they travel with the page they sit on. Reorder after numbering and you get a document whose numbers read 1, 5, 3, 2 — and there is no way to renumber in place, only to go back to an unnumbered copy. So the order is always: assemble with Merge PDF, reorder, remove what should not be there, and only then number.

What reordering does to your file

  • Quality is untouched. Pages are copied, not re-rendered or re-compressed. Text stays selectable, images keep their resolution.
  • The file size barely moves. Only the page order changes, not the content.
  • Duplicated pages are real pages. They print and display like any other; the file grows by roughly the size of the duplicated content.
  • Printed page numbers do not follow. A footer that says "Page 3 of 12" is part of the page image and keeps saying 3 wherever the page ends up.
  • Bookmarks and internal links can end up pointing at the wrong page. A table of contents entry for page 40 points to whatever is now in position 40.
  • Form fields may not survive. Interactive fields belong to the document as much as to the page; fill and flatten the form first if the answers have to stay visible.

Common problems, and what they mean

I only need to turn some pages the right way up. That is rotation, not reordering: Rotate PDF lets you pick the pages to turn.

I need to take pages out, not move them. Delete PDF Pages does it in one pass with the page numbers typed in, which is faster than removing them one at a time here. The guide How to delete pages from a PDF covers what that changes.

I need each section as its own file. That is a split: Split PDF cuts one document into several by ranges, every N pages, or one file per page.

I only want a few pages, in a new order. Extract PDF pages keeps your selection as one new file; reorder that smaller file afterwards.

"This PDF is password-protected." An encrypted file cannot be rewritten until it is decrypted. Remove the password with Unlock PDF if you have it, reorder, then protect the result again.

A long document is slow to show thumbnails. Every page is rendered in your browser to make its preview. A few hundred pages take a moment on a laptop and longer on a phone; let it finish rather than reloading.

Questions people ask

Does reordering change the original file? No. A new PDF is written and downloaded, and the file you dropped in is untouched.

Can I drag the pages instead of using the arrows? The arrows move a page one position at a time, which is precise on a phone where dragging a thumbnail is fiddly. For a page that has to travel a long way, Reverse order or a split-and-merge is usually quicker than twenty clicks.

Can I sort the pages automatically? Only to the original order or the reverse of it. There is no way for a tool to know which order a scanned stack was meant to be in.

Are my documents uploaded? No. The pages are read and rewritten in your browser, on your device.

Is there a page limit? No fixed limit; files up to 200 MB are accepted. The practical ceiling is your device's memory, because every page is previewed.
